There are a number of reasons why stress should never be underestimated. Primarily, stress can save your life, because it is the body’s way of protecting you. Stress helps you stay focused, energetic and alert, especially in emergencies, and enables you to find extra strength and speed when you need it the most. It also helps you to rise to everyday challenges - both at work and in a leisure capacity. So, for example, stress can help you perform well during an important presentation, or it will enable you to participate in sports to a higher degree.

Unfortunately, when stress and emotions meet, at a time when all you want to do is chill out or watch TV, or sleep, then stress can impact on your health and wellbeing, and general quality of life, by bringing down your mood and altering your productivity.

When stress and emotions collide

You may notice a number of factors are affected by stress when stress and emotions meet. One of the biggest impacts stress and emotions can have is the affect on your ability to sleep. You may find yourself tossing and turning and unable to drift off, or you may fall asleep quickly but wake up in the early hours and lie awake thinking and worrying. Sleep disturbance is often linked to stress, anxiety and depression, and therefore should be taken seriously and treated, because the side effects of sleep deprivation can be detrimental to health.

Stress and emotions can produce physical symptoms too, such as headaches, upset stomachs, grumbling aches and pains and so on. These niggling little symptoms can further enhance your low mood and sense of frustration.

In addition, lack of sleep, and any pain we’re experiencing, feed into our capacity to maintain an even temper. We may become unusually grouchy or have trouble controlling our anger which can make life very unpleasant for our nearest and dearest or our friends or work colleagues. If you are fine by yourself, but become irrationally bad-tempered while with others, you may need to take stock of the situation you’re in and monitor your stress and emotions. A stress overload can be bad for both your physical and mental health.  

Another sign to watch out for is when you have memory problems. Stress has a tendency to interfere with your memory. Stress and emotions may come about thanks to certain life events such as puberty or the menopause, or thanks to a preoccupation with a work problem, or a lack of sleep. Traumatic events and illnesses can also heighten stress and lead to problems with your memory.

Finally, it’s important to look out for a lack of energy, extreme tiredness or chronic fatigue. When your stress and emotions become overloaded, your body begins to shut down and that is a sign that you need to take some expert advice.
