How to prevent obesity
The prevention of obesity
If only there was a magic wand that someone could wave and ensure that the prevention of obesity was a done deal. It seems like some of us know how to prevent obesity and others don’t. Some of us are born, destined to be thin, and some of us are not so lucky.
Is it really as simple as this? Well in some ways, yes. Genetics does play a part in our size and metabolism, but so too does our own personal history and the way we are brought up. The habits that we learn in childhood often become ingrained, and so if we are children that slumped in front of the TV, eating biscuits and cakes, we will probably grow up to be those adults too, and perhaps more disastrously, we’ll teach our kids those same bad habits.
How to prevent obesity
There are only two clear cut ways to prevent obesity. These are to eat less and exercise more. For some people this is easy to do. They are happy to be active and they never comfort eat. They prefer salad to food that is full of sugar, fat, oil and salt (like many fast food meals) and they drink sensibly.
For the rest of us, it is more of a struggle. The prevention of obesity has to start with our hearts and our minds. The mind is actually more important than you might realise. If you eat because you are unhappy, or lonely, or sad, or angry, or because you are ‘treating yourself’ then you have issues that you need to address. No-one has a right to judge you for this, but at the very least it is important that you understand what is going on yourself.
Once you see that you’re addressing your emotional issues, then eating sensibly becomes easier to do.
There are any number of diets out there that you can try out. What is vital is that you don’t become disheartened if you over eat or eat the wrong things one day. Just get back on to your diet as soon as you can. You’re in this for the long haul, after all.
In terms of exercise, start in a way that makes you comfortable and at-ease about exercising. You’ll find videos on You Tube that will enable you to exercise in the privacy of your own home, or you can take a walk every day – and walk further and faster every day until you’re much fitter. When you’re ready, then you can join a gym or a class. Exercising is essential, but do it in a way that suits you.
