Obesity epidemic
The obesity epidemic
The Western world is gripped by an obesity epidemic that seems to be getting ever more serious. In the USA, research has shown that one in three adults are obese, and in the UK, that figure is one in five and growing.
What is the cause of the obesity epidemic?
While obesity is nothing new, it does seem as though increasingly obesity is a product of our modern age. Here in the twenty first century, we have unrivalled access to convenience food that is full of fat and high in sugar. We buy more takeaway food, and cook less at home. At the same time, we tend to live further away from the centres of industry meaning we commute to work and to school and we aren’t as active as our ancestors who had to walk everywhere.
In addition to this, concerns about safety in childhood have meant that children stay closer to home and don’t venture out into the fields and forests as our forebears did. Our children play with games, watch TV or are glued to their mobiles and computers. They have a sedentary lifestyle from early in their lives and this affects their habits as they grow up.
Why should we worry about the obesity epidemic?
People who are obese can suffer serious and life threatening illnesses. You are more likely to suffer with coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes or have a stroke, if you are obese or overweight. There is also a higher risk of having some types of cancer, osteoarthritis, liver disease and kidney disease. That’s not much fun.
What should you do about it?
If you fear your weight is a concern and you want to avoid being part of the obesity epidemic there are two things to do. Eat less and exercise more. It sounds simple, but of course if you love your food, it is not easy to do.
You need a long term goal to lose X amount of weight and feel fitter. That goal might take you two or three years to achieve but what have you got to lose? At the moment time is on your side. The longer you leave it the more difficult it will be to shift the pounds or your body. Take small steps to get to your long term goal. This month aim to do Y. This week do Z. Every day you can ask yourself, “what have I done today to help the future me?”
